With the development of reusable space launch systems, humanity is on the verge of a new era in space, where research programs are able to be accelerated through the industrial development in space. SpaceDIRT will support this shift by leveraging Canadian excellence in resource development and robotics to support the development of resources and technologies critical to long term space missions.
A key resource that needs to be developed in-situ is agriculture. Any talk of space development or colonization will require the ability to produce food in-situ.
Much research has been undertaken on the surface of the Moon and Mars, however what lies beneath the surface including potential groundwater, mineral deposits, temperature gradients, has yet to be explored. With advances in spaceflight in the New Space Era, we have the capability to send less specialized and more capable equipment to space.
